Sustainability at our events
Overview
Our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment is not only evident in our overarching strategy but also deeply embedded in the fabric of our events. We believe in fostering a world where renewable energy is the norm, and our events play a crucial role in driving this vision forward.
Leading the charge: ISO 20121 certification
In 2023, RenewableUK achieved a significant milestone by securing ISO 20121 certification for Event Sustainability Management. Integrated into our ISO 9001 management system, this certification underscores our dedication to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. By adopting ISO 20121, we actively contribute to a sustainable future while delivering exceptional event experiences with positive environmental and social impacts.
Sustainable event practices
We collaborate with suppliers and businesses that align with our principles, ensuring sustainability from the early stages of development to the completion of each event. Regular carbon footprint reviews and timely action make our events as sustainable as possible, supporting the transition to renewable energy sources across the UK.
Reducing waste
We take pride in reducing waste through innovative practices:
- Using digital documents and SeaCourt (B Corp) local printers for essential printing.
- Employing mobile apps at events, eliminating the need for printed programmes.
- Utilising recyclable, recycled, or bamboo lanyards.
- Embracing digital signage to minimise paper use.
Regulations for exhibitors and sponsors
We work closely with our exhibitors and sponsors to ensure the exhibition and associated build are as environmentally friendly as possible. For the first time at our flagship event Global Offshore Wind, all stand contractors and exhibitors are required to submit a sustainability plan covering areas including the lifecycle of the stand, packing materials, transport of stand materials and builders.
We use re-wind carpets at our biggest shows which contain no latex; therefore, no water is required in the manufacturing process. The elimination of water and latex results in no oven-drying process. The energy required to produce the Rewind range is 85% less than traditional event carpets. CO2 emissions are reduced by 55% in the manufacturing process. Re-wind carpets are lighter than traditional cord carpet meaning easier handling on site and increased delivery capacity.
Choosing the right suppliers
In supplier selection, we prioritise local options to reduce travel emissions. Engaging in open conversations with suppliers allows us to challenge and find sustainable solutions, ensuring the use of the most eco-friendly products and services.
Venue selection
We use venues that have high sustainability credentials and meet ISO or other high standards.
By choosing locations that are easily accessible by sustainable transport options, we significantly reduce our events’ carbon footprint.
Catering
We promote sustainability through our food choices by using local and in seasonal produce at our shows, with a mostly vegetarian menu.
In addition, some of the catering suppliers we work with, such as the ACC Liverpool, calculate the footprint of each dish on the menu with a carbon measuring company called Klimato, enabling us to choose food options that have a low carbon impact.
Governance and social impact
Our commitment extends beyond events:
- Offering student tickets for all our events, supporting the promotion of careers in the renewable energy industry
- Connecting the right people to encourage innovation within their fields and create exposure
- Promoting renewables and economic growth opportunities that come alongside the deployment of technologies represented by RenewableUK
- Providing career development opportunities such as facilitating job transfers thus supporting the sector’s workforce
- Engaging with local communities. For example, with our partnership with Unifrog that enables us to engage with local schools by bringing school students to our larger events
- Working closely with Convention Bureaus supporting the local area and businesses
- Collecting and reporting on gender and ethnicity data from our attendees and speakers and we aim to offer a programme with diverse panels
How can you help?
While we endeavour to make our events as sustainable as possible, as an attendee, your choices also have an impact. Here's some things you can do to help keep our events sustainable:
- Plan your journey. Your journey to and from the event can be one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions related to our events. Opt for public transport, carshare, or consider sustainable travel options. Public transport options and the nearest train stations are shown on each event that we host.
- Choose sustainable businesses. If staying overnight, research local hotels, restaurants and other business committed to sustainability.
- Bring a water bottle! Water refill points are available at our events. We'd encourage you to bring your own water bottle.
