New report highlights how all four UK nations can work closer together to build more wind energy projects
12 December 2024 - RenewableUK press release
Commenting on the IPPR report ‘Everything, everywhere all at once’ on the need for a coordinated approach by all four nations in the UK to build more onshore and offshore wind farms faster, RenewableUK’s Executive Director of Policy and Engagement Ana Musat said:
“As this report shows, closer coordination on energy policy between the UK Government and the devolved nations is vital to reach clean power by 2030, as nearly every onshore wind project and a third of offshore projects are in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“The report highlights a set of clear measures for achieving this, including forming a joint high-level committee to ensure all parts of the UK are aligned on renewable energy targets, and collaborating on devolved issues such as planning and skills by taking on board the best practices from each nation.
“We also need to see a change in political dynamics, as the report highlights the need for devolved nations to have more input into issues determined by the UK Government such as building grid infrastructure, regenerating ports and creating new supply chains, as part of a comprehensive green industrial strategy which will enable all parts of the UK to build the energy system of the future. The Government’s forthcoming Clean Power 2030 Action Plan and Strategic Spatial Energy Plan will be important levers for embedding the four-nations approach into the energy transition.”
