New wind energy record set as turbines generate 22.2 gigawatts of electricity
16 December 2024 - RenewableUK press release
RenewableUK is highlighting a new wind energy generation record of 22.4 gigawatts (GW) of clean electricity, as confirmed by the National Energy System Operator (NESO). The record was set at 6:30pm on Sunday 15 December, beating the previous record of 21.8GW set on 21 December 2023.
Commenting on the record, which provided 54% of Britain's electricity, RenewableUK's Director of Future Electricity Systems Barnaby Wharton said:
“Last week’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan set out specific targets for wind and solar farms, so it’s fantastic to see wind energy breaking records and once again taking centre stage in our modern clean energy mix, keeping Britain powered up at the coldest, darkest time of the year and strengthening our energy security.
“We know a system dominated by wind and solar is the lowest cost for billpayers, and we look forward to working with Government now that it has a clear roadmap to achieving this.”
