Electric dreams: how the planning system can help deliver the UK’s low-carbon energy
19 November 2024 - RenewableUK joint report
A new report from RenewableUK, alongside the Aldersgate Group and CPRE, sets out how the planning system can deliver the Government’s Clean Power 2030 target while protecting nature, landscapes and communities’ rights. ‘Electric dreams: how the planning system can help deliver the UK’s low-carbon energy’ explains that more resources, a more strategic approach and better communication with the public will ensure it can help accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and grid infrastructure.
The report calls for a public campaign to make the case for renewables and grid infrastructure, publication of a Strategic Spatial Plan that prioritises consideration of the natural environment, as well as more resources for local authorities to enable improved community engagement across the planning system. The report focusses on the planning system for onshore Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) and finds that, by addressing gaps in strategic planning and communications and resolving resourcing challenges, the Government can ensure that the NSIP regime acts as an enabler and supports the deployment of renewable energy and grid infrastructure.
